Also called the Golden Temple, the series of rock caves in Dambulla is spectacular to say the least. Though it is a point of attraction today for locals and tourists alike, they were once where Buddhist monks sought refuge in and lived out their days in meditational practice. The caves feature Brahmi inscriptions dating back to it’s assumed, around the 1st century BC. The structure is also supposed to have been the work of an ancient Sri Lankan king, King Vattagamini Abaya. The caves themselves are interconnecting, and filled with expansive statues, drawings and a wealth of other treasures that offer a great deal of insight into those times.
