Kandy Perahera

To truly understand the magnificence and regality of the Kandy Perahera, one must see it first-hand. It’s also one of the oldest traditions both culturally and religiously in Sri Lanka. Typically held in the month of August, it draws in a flood of spectators from all corners of the globe annually, which means that you should ideally book your spots well in advance. A procession set up to honour the Sacred Tooth Relic, the Kandy ‘Esala Maha’ Perahera is enshrined in rituals and protocol, with preparation beginning months ahead. It’s a dazzling affair, and has a bigger, more profound purpose than simply parading down the streets; it’s a request to the gods for their blessings for rain and a healthy cultivation.
